What's the difference between anxiety and intuition?

You feel a tightening in your chest and a voice that says don't. Is that your intuition protecting you? Or is that anxiety running the same old script it always runs?

This is one of the questions I get asked more than almost any other, because most of us were never taught to tell the two apart. We were taught to override both. So now they just feel like the same static.

Here is where they split.

Anxiety is loud. It doesn't say something once and go quiet. It circles. It brings a list of what ifs and it keeps adding to that list the longer you sit with it. Give anxiety five minutes and it will hand you ten scenarios, all worse than the last. It needs your attention and it will keep pulling at you until it gets it.

Intuition doesn't work that way. It drops in fast, usually within the first second or two, and it doesn't repeat itself. It sounds like your own voice, not a warning siren. It is quiet, clean, and it moves on. If you miss it, it doesn't chase you down and beg you to listen. That's actually one of the reasons so many people dismiss it. It's too gentle to compete with the noise.

There's a feeling test too. Anxiety contracts you. Your body braces, your breath gets shallow, your world gets small. Intuition, even when it's telling you something hard, carries a kind of spaciousness. It might ask you to walk away from something. It might ask you to say the hard thing. But underneath it there is a steadiness, not a spiral.

Here's the part that trips people up the most. If you grew up around chaos, or in a nervous system that learned early to scan for danger, your body may read neutral situations as threats. That response is real. It is not intuition though. That's survival intelligence doing its job, a job it learned a long time ago to keep you safe. It deserves compassion, not dismissal. But it isn't the same thing as your soul's guidance.

So how do you actually build the skill of telling them apart? You don't do it by thinking harder about it. You do it by noticing. Notice what shows up first, before the mind gets involved. Notice whether the feeling widens you or shrinks you. Notice whether it needs to convince you, or whether it just quietly knows.

This is awareness doing its work. To notice is to activate your awareness. Awareness is what lets you catch that first flash before the noise of anxiety builds on top of it. Without awareness, you're only ever hearing the loudest voice in the room, and anxiety is very good at being the loudest voice in the room.

The more you practise this, the clearer the line becomes. Not because intuition gets louder. It never will. But because you get quieter, and quieter enough to hear what was there all along.
